Harvest Closure on Unclipped Fall Chinook Extended Until Oct. 3

IDAHO — Idaho Fish and Game has extended the closure on harvesting unclipped adult fall Chinook salmon statewide through October 3. The original closure began September 19 and is intended to protect wild fish populations while ensuring long-term fishing opportunities.

The restriction applies only to unclipped adult fall Chinook, which must be released unharmed. Anglers may still harvest adipose-clipped adults measuring 24 inches or longer, along with any jacks.

Fisheries managers cited unusually warm water in the Columbia and Snake rivers as a key factor behind the closure. The warmer conditions have slowed salmon migration and reduced the number of fish reaching Idaho. By restricting harvest, the department hopes to lower overall mortality of wild Chinook, remain within harvest limits, and secure enough fish for spawning.

Officials noted that without this measure, the entire fall Chinook fishery could face closure for the remainder of the season. The department will continue to review harvest data and monitor fish passage through the Columbia and Snake rivers. Depending on conditions, harvest of unclipped adults could reopen after next week if enough wild fish remain available.
