Five Dead After Sunday Attack at Michigan Church

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, MI – Authorities say five people, including the suspected gunman, were killed during an attack Sunday morning at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.

Police report the incident began around 10:25 a.m., when a 40-year-old man drove a vehicle into the church building, then opened fire and started a fire inside. Law enforcement shot and killed the suspect at the scene.

Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the community, which is located roughly 60 miles north of Detroit. Fire crews have since put out the blaze.

In a statement, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office called the situation “incredibly catastrophic” and said multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including local police, Michigan State Police, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. About 100 FBI personnel are assisting.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said she has been receiving updates and described the attack as deeply troubling, especially occurring at a place of worship.

Several people were taken to hospitals.

The structure sustained heavy fire damage. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson described the situation as “dynamic” as first responders worked to get control of the scene Sunday afternoon.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed and noted that the suspect was dead but that information was still developing. He referred to the shooting as a targeted attack on Christians.

The investigation is ongoing.
