LEWISTON, ID – A man was arrested in Lewiston after an alleged assault on a police officer during a welfare check late last week.
According to court documents, 37-year-old Andrew J. Miller was taken into custody last Thursday, on a charge of battery upon certain personnel, a felony. Miller is listed in the court documents as homeless.
A Lewiston Police Officer responded to a welfare check call around 6:49 p.m. in the 300 block of St. Johns Way. Court documents state that hospital security at nearby St. Joseph Regional Medical Center had requested Miller be trespassed from the property.
The affidavit says Miller appeared disoriented and, after being asked by an officer to sign a trespass form, Miller allegedly struck the officer on the left side of the head with a closed fist. The officer later reported swelling and soreness to his face.
Miller was arrested and transported to the Nez Perce County Adult Detention Center. He appeared in court on Friday. Judge Karen Seubert set bond at $5,000 and ordered a competency evaluation. As of Monday afternoon, Miller remained in custody.
