PULLMAN, WA — The Lauren McCluskey Foundation will host its annual Race for Campus Safety this Saturday, October 4, at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine campus in Pullman. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and is expected to draw more than 800 participants.
The race honors the life of Lauren McCluskey, a Pullman native and University of Utah student-athlete who was murdered in 2018 by a man she briefly dated. The foundation was established to raise awareness and improve responses to relationship violence and stalking on college campuses.
Participants can choose from several race options, including a 1K kids run, 5K, or 10K, with a virtual option available for those joining remotely. Beyond the race, the event will feature family-friendly activities such as inflatable obstacle courses, yard games, educational booths, live entertainment, and appearances by mascots Butch T. Cougar, Joe Vandal, and W.T. Bank.
Support for runners will be provided by the Washington State Nurses Association, while timing will be managed by Brooksee Race Timing. Students can register at a discounted rate through ASWSU or ASUI. Proceeds from the event go toward research, education, and resources to address relationship violence and stalking on college campuses.
In addition to the race, the foundation will offer free SASS Go self-defense classes on October 3 and 4 in both Pullman and Moscow. The Pullman session will be held at the Residence Inn Marriott, and the Moscow class will take place at the University of Idaho ISUB. The sessions, taught by licensed instructors, are open to women and girls.
