STANLEY, ID — The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced that State Highway 21 north of Grandjean will close tomorrow, October 2, instead of the originally scheduled October 7, because of increased rainfall and unstable conditions.
The agency stated that recent storms, combined with existing landslide activity, have created significant safety hazards for drivers and road crews. The area has seen ongoing slope instability due to burn scars from the Wapiti Fire, which ITD officials say heightens the risk of additional mudslides as more rain arrives.
Highway 21 will remain closed while crews complete emergency repairs linked to a major landslide that occurred in August. That slide blocked a culvert and forced Canyon Creek to flow along the highway shoulder, eroding the roadway. Repair work includes installing a new six-foot culvert across both lanes to redirect the creek back into its natural channel and prevent further damage.
ITD estimates the closure will last until Wednesday. Drivers can monitor traffic conditions and closure updates at 511.idaho.gov or through the Idaho 511 mobile app.
