PULLMAN, WA – The criminal on-scene investigation at Sunday’s large apartment complex blaze on Pullman’s Military Hill is expected to continue for another day.
Authorities believe that 40-year-old Elijah Reagan used an explosive device to set fire to his apartment building on Larry Street. No one was hurt, but the flames quickly burned several units. Pullman Police are leading the investigation. Chief Aaron Breshears says that federal law enforcement has offered to help. ATF has reached out to see if they can assist, and Chief Breshears expects that his investigators will likely take the agents up on their offer. He hopes to have the criminal investigation on scene wrapped up by Tuesday night. The Spokane Bomb Squad searched the building on Sunday night and did not find any additional explosive devices.
Reagan was arrested after an armed standoff with several local law enforcement agencies and the Whitman County Regional SWAT Team. He was safely taken into custody late Sunday night on U.S. Highway 195 South of Uniontown in Idaho, just across the state line. Reagan is in jail in Lewiston awaiting extradition to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office jail in Colfax to face an expected arson charge. Chief Breshears says the car chase before the standoff ran from the Pullman area on Whitman County rural roads down to Colton and onto the highway.
City of Pullman Fire Chief Ryan Scharnhorst has clarified that the apartment building that burned had 18 units. Six of those units were damaged by the flames. The occupants in the building that was burned are unable to return to their homes until both the police and fire department investigations are complete. The Red Cross has set up a shelter for the fire victims at Pullman City Hall.
