Driver Killed After Hitting Cow on US-26 in Southern Idaho

BONNEVILLE COUNTY, ID — Idaho State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning, October 6, on U.S. Highway 26 near mile marker 365 in Bonneville County.

A 2010 Volkswagen CC driven by a 30-year-old man from Idaho Falls was traveling eastbound when it struck a cow in the roadway, according to Idaho State Police. The vehicle became disabled in the travel lane, and shortly after, a 2019 Ram 2500 pickup—also traveling eastbound and driven by a 19-year-old man from Idaho Falls—struck the Volkswagen amid thick fog and darkness.

The driver of the Volkswagen died at the scene. The driver of the pickup was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

U.S. 26 was blocked for approximately four hours while emergency crews investigated. Responding agencies included the Idaho Transportation Department, Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, Swan Valley Fire Department, and Idaho Falls Ambulance.

The crash remains under investigation by Idaho State Police District 6.
