EHD Outbreak Impacts White-Tailed Deer in Clearwater Region

LEWISTON, ID — Idaho Fish and Game reports that Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) has caused significant white-tailed deer losses across the Clearwater Region, particularly in areas north of Deary. As of October 6, biologists have received nearly 1,000 reports of suspected EHD-related deer deaths, with most cases originating from Units 8 and 8A.

EHD is a naturally occurring viral disease transmitted by biting midges, commonly called “no-see-ums.” While not a threat to humans or livestock, the disease can be fatal to deer, often causing death within a few days of infection.

Approximately 72% of recent reports have come from Units 8 and 8A, and another 18% from Units 11A and 14. Fish and Game officials say this year’s outbreak is similar in severity to the 2021 event but centered farther north. The 2021 outbreak mainly affected Kamiah, Kooskia, and surrounding areas near the South Fork Clearwater River.

Despite localized die-offs, the department does not plan to alter current deer seasons. Biologists report that white-tailed deer populations remain strong overall and above conservation concern across most of the region. Hunters may notice fewer deer in certain areas, especially those hardest hit near Deary, but many higher-elevation areas are expected to remain productive for hunting.

Following previous outbreaks in 2003 and 2021, harvest rates did not significantly decline, and populations recovered well within a few years. Fish and Game expects a similar rebound this time due to the species’ high reproductive rates.

The department will continue monitoring harvest reports and field observations throughout the fall to assess the impact. Recovery from EHD events typically occurs within three to five years, depending on winter conditions and habitat quality.
