SPOKANE VALLEY, WA — Spokane Valley deputies arrested an 18-year-old man Sunday afternoon after he reportedly stabbed one person, pointed a replica pistol at another’s head, and threatened several others during a violent encounter near E. 8th Avenue and S. Eastern Road.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 3:15 p.m. to a report of a stabbing and found an adult female victim with a serious leg injury. Bystanders were providing aid before Spokane Valley Fire personnel transported her to the hospital with what appeared to be a non-life-threatening wound.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as Daniel R. Cozby, had recently ended a brief relationship with one of the victims. When the woman attempted to retrieve her belongings with friends and a juvenile family member of Cozby’s, he allegedly confronted them from behind a concrete barrier.
Cozby reportedly told the group, “I have a gun and a knife and I’m not afraid to use it,” before leaving and returning with both weapons. Witnesses said he then pointed what appeared to be a black semiautomatic handgun and a large knife at the victims, threatening to kill or injure them.
During the confrontation, Cozby allegedly stabbed one woman in the leg and struggled with his juvenile relative, at one point pointing the replica gun at her head and smashing her cellphone when she tried to call 911. Multiple witnesses nearby called for help after hearing screams and seeing the attack unfold.
Deputies later detained Cozby at his residence in the 1000 block of S. Eastern Road. He received medical treatment for cuts sustained during the struggle before being booked into the Spokane County Jail. Deputies recovered the knife and determined the handgun was a realistic-looking BB pistol.
Cozby faces four felony counts of first-degree assault, as well as misdemeanor charges of interfering with the reporting of domestic violence and third-degree malicious mischief.
