OLYMPIA, WA — The Washington State Department of Enterprise Services (DES) reported that an intruder broke into the State Legislative Building on the night of October 5, causing extensive damage to multiple areas inside.

The incident resulted in significant harm to the State Reception Room, a space recognized for its historical and democratic symbolism. According to DES, the room houses numerous priceless and irreplaceable artifacts, some of which were damaged during the break-in.

DES temporarily closed the building Monday morning to ensure the safety of staff and visitors while assessing the extent of the damage. The building has since reopened, though certain sections remain closed as repairs and evaluations continue.

Washington State Patrol took the suspect into custody following notification from DES security personnel.

DES Director Matt Jones expressed appreciation for the swift response from DES staff and law enforcement partners, stating that the agency is reviewing security procedures for the Capitol Campus to protect employees and the public.

DES will release further updates as assessments and repairs progress.
