UTV Crash Near Elk River Claims Life of Kootenai County Deputy

ELK RIVER, ID – A Kootenai County Sheriff’s Deputy was found deceased after an overnight search near Elk River early Friday morning, according to the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 1:41 a.m. on October 10, deputies received a report of an overdue person who had been operating a UTV in the backcountry near Elk River. Clearwater County deputies, Search and Rescue, and the Back Country Medics Helicopter launched an extensive search effort spanning from Elk River to Dworshak Reservoir. The search also included drones, UTVs, and pickup trucks.

Several hunters camping in the area assisted search teams. Around noon, volunteer hunters discovered the missing UTV near the South Fork of Robinson Creek. The vehicle had rolled down an old logging road, and the operator had been ejected during the crash.

The victim was identified as Dale Law, 43, of Hayden, Idaho. Law was a deputy with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office and was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to Law’s family and colleagues.
