LEWISTON, ID — An 11-year-old boy was seriously injured Wednesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle at the intersection of 21st Street and 11th Avenue, according to the Lewiston Police Department.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene at approximately 7:44 a.m. The preliminary investigation determined the boy was in the crosswalk when he was hit by a 1993 Ford F-150 driven by a 21-year-old Lewiston man. The driver, who had a green light while turning right from 11th Avenue onto 21st Street, remained at the scene. Investigators said impairment was not a factor.
The child was first transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, then flown to Spokane with life-threatening injuries. The intersection was closed for about two hours as the department’s Major Crash Investigation Team examined the scene.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact School Resource Officer Smith or Corporal Adam Carson at the Lewiston Police Department.
Police also reminded drivers and pedestrians to use extra caution near intersections and school zones, particularly during hours when children are traveling to and from school.
