MOSCOW, ID – The University of Idaho has recorded its ninth straight semester of enrollment growth, welcoming its second-largest freshman class ever this fall — second only to the record-setting class of 2024. The institution now reports its largest undergraduate population in history.

According to data released by the university, total enrollment stands at 12,383 students for Fall 2025, reflecting a 0.8% increase from last year’s 12,286. First-to-second-year retention improved from 75.6% in 2024 to 77.3%, highlighting continued efforts to help students progress toward their degrees.

Undergraduate enrollment climbed 3% to 7,978 students, while Idaho resident undergraduate numbers rose by 5%. When excluding dual-credit high school students, total enrollment reached 10,849 — a 2.6% increase from last year.

U of I President Scott Green credited the university’s consistent growth to its ability to stand out among national trends showing enrollment declines at many institutions. “Not only are new students trusting us for their education, but our growing retention shows that students find their place in the Vandal Family and stay to enjoy the strong outcomes,” Green said.

Graduate student numbers also rose, with total enrollment reaching 2,021 — the highest in a decade. New first-time graduate students increased by 3.3%, and master’s degree enrollment hit a ten-year high at 1,382 students.

The Western Undergraduate Exchange program, which offers tuition discounts to students from 16 Western states and regions, saw participation grow 6% to 1,872 students. The College of Law posted the largest first-year class in its history, up nearly 10% from last year with 502 students enrolled.

“For the sixth year in a row, the University of Idaho is recognized as a Best Value Public University by U.S. News and World Report,” said Dean Kahler, vice provost for strategic enrollment management. “We believe that students and families see the tremendous value of pursuing a degree at the University of Idaho.”
