LEWISTON, ID – An Oregon man was arrested in Lewiston on Monday following a traffic stop that led to charges of driving under the influence and battery on a peace officer, according to court documents filed in Nez Perce County.
According to an affidavit filed in the case, a 2019 Ford Taurus was stopped around 6:10 p.m. after being observed traveling at an estimated 40 miles per hour over the speed limit on 24th Street N. in Lewiston. The vehicle also was reportedly observed failing to stop and crossing into the oncoming lane of traffic.
The driver, identified as Jeffery R. Spaght, 37, of Salem, Oregon, appeared upset and yelled at the trooper upon contact, the report states. A strong odor of alcohol was detected, and Spaght reportedly admitted to consuming “one beer.” The affidavit describes slurred speech, glassy eyes, and erratic behavior consistent with intoxication.
Field sobriety tests indicated several clues of impairment.
After being informed he was under arrest for driving under the influence, Spaght initially complied but later became argumentative. While officers attempted to move him, a brief struggle occurred in which Spaght allegedly kicked an officer in the knee, causing both men to fall to the ground. The officer sustained minor cuts to his arm during the incident, according to the affidavit.
Following the altercation, Spaght was restrained and transported to the Nez Perce County Jail. Two breath samples showed blood alcohol concentrations of 0.160 and 0.148, about twice the legal limit in Idaho.
Spaght is being charged with Driving Under the Influence and Battery on a Peace Officer. He was expected to make his initial appearance in court on Tuesday afternoon.
