Oversized Load Damages Bullfrog Overpass, Closes Westbound I-90 Near Cle Elum

CLE ELUM, WA. — Westbound Interstate 90 remains closed near Cle Elum after an oversized load struck the Bullfrog Overpass at Exit 80 Tuesday night, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

The crash occurred around milepost 80.5 when the load hit the overpass, causing structural damage and prompting an immediate closure of westbound lanes. Washington State Patrol troopers stopped the driver, and Commercial Vehicle Troopers are investigating.

Traffic is being detoured off the highway at Exit 80 before reentering I-90 via the on-ramp. WSDOT has also coordinated with Kittitas County Public Works to provide local detours along Bullfrog Road for Cle Elum travelers.

Governor Bob Ferguson said bridge inspectors are on site examining the structure.

“We anticipate sharing with the public how long Westbound I-90 will be closed, and our next steps, no later than Monday,” Ferguson said. “If that changes, we will alert the public right away. The Washington State Patrol is investigating the incident. Our state will be pursuing the cost of repairs with the trucking company.”

WSDOT crews continue to assess the extent of the damage and plan repairs. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
