Fall Open Burning Season Begins October 24 in Moscow

MOSCOW, ID — The City of Moscow Fire Department has announced that the 2025 Fall Open Burning Season will take place from October 24 through December 1, 2025.

During this period, residents are permitted to burn garden waste, tree trimmings, and brush without a written permit. However, all burning activities must follow city safety guidelines.

Safety Requirements
Burn piles up to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high must be kept at least 25 feet from buildings or combustible materials, while larger piles require a minimum 50-foot clearance. A garden hose or fire extinguisher must be available on-site, and a responsible person must remain at the location until the fire is completely extinguished. Burning is restricted to daylight hours.

Restrictions and Enforcement
Burning of construction or demolition debris and materials producing toxic smoke or strong odors is prohibited. Fires must not be conducted on public lands and must be extinguished before dark.

The Fire Department may discontinue burning if smoke becomes a hazard or if the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality issues a burn ban or air quality warning. Violations could result in fines under the City of Moscow Code.

For air quality updates, residents can contact the DEQ hotline at (866) 790-4337 or (208) 373-0502. Questions about open burning can be directed to Moscow Fire Chief Brian Nickerson at (208) 882-2831 or through the city’s website at ci.moscow.id.us.
