North Idaho Sheriff Resigns Following Off-Duty Traffic Accident

WALLACE, ID – Shoshone County Sheriff Holly Lindsay has resigned from her position, one day after being involved in an off-duty traffic accident, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office.

The office said the incident occurred on Tuesday while Lindsay was driving her personal vehicle. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to conduct an investigation. Details from that investigation have not yet been released. Various media outlets are reporting the incident was a hit and run.

On Wednesday, Shoshone County received a formal letter of resignation from Lindsay. In her letter, she thanked the community, the Board of County Commissioners, and her colleagues for their support during her 21-year law enforcement career.

“I have loved this community with everything that I have, but it is with a heavy heart that I must resign from the position of the Shoshone County Sheriff,” Lindsay wrote. “It has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

The Sheriff’s Office said Undersheriff Lance Stutzke will assume the responsibilities of sheriff in the interim until the Board of County Commissioners appoints a replacement.

“Sheriff Lindsay will be greatly missed by our SCSO team,” the agency said. “We ask that everyone please respect the many years of service that Sheriff Lindsay has dedicated to our community.”
