Moscow Names Miriam Åkervall as 2025–2027 Poet Laureate

MOSCOW, ID — The City of Moscow and the Moscow Arts Commission have selected poet and translator Miriam Åkervall as the city’s Poet Laureate for 2025 through 2027.

Åkervall’s work has been featured in publications including Colorado Review, Black Warrior Review, and The Greensboro Review. Their translation of Astrakanerna (The Garden of the Dead) by Swedish author Marie Lundquist earned an honorable mention in the 2024 Nadia Christensen Translation Prize and is set for release through Ugly Duckling Presse. Åkervall’s writing has also been supported by the Vermont Studio Center and the American Literary Translators Association.

As the fourth individual to hold the position, Åkervall will serve a two-year term through September 2027. Their selection followed a summer call for submissions open to published poets residing in Moscow.

The Poet Laureate works with the Moscow Arts Commission and Arts Department to coordinate readings, workshops, and other public literary events. Updates on Åkervall’s upcoming appearances will be available through the City of Moscow’s Arts Connections mailing list at ci.moscow.id.us/606/Arts-Connections-Opportunities.

The Moscow Poet Laureate Program was established in 2015 to promote poetry’s role in civic life and reflect the city’s cultural character through writing. Past laureates include Tiffany Midge (2015–2018), Susan Hodgin (2018–2021), and Stacy Boe Miller (2021–2024).

Support for the city’s arts programming is provided by the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
