SEL Announces Major Expansion Projects in Idaho and North Carolina

PULLMAN, WA — Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is planning major expansions in Idaho and North Carolina, marking approximately $90 million in capital investments over the next two years as the company continues to grow its manufacturing and operational footprint.

The employee-owned power system protection and technology company announced Monday that it will add a total of 370,000 square feet across campuses in Moscow and Boise, Idaho, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

In Moscow, SEL will build a 150,000-square-foot electronic device manufacturing facility on its Schwartz Campus along South Main Street. The $50 million project is expected to significantly increase production capabilities when completed in 2027.

In Boise, the company will purchase and remodel a 170,000-square-foot building to support its expanding workforce and engineering operations. The $25 million project is scheduled for completion in 2026.

SEL will also construct a new 50,000-square-foot office building in Charlotte, strengthening its panels and enclosures manufacturing operations near its existing facility at 901 Center Park Drive. That $15 million project is anticipated to wrap up in 2027.

Founder Edmund O. Schweitzer III said the expansion reflects optimism despite recent economic uncertainty involving global trade. He noted that existing facilities have been stretched to accommodate increased demand for the company’s products.

“Our teams have been making adjustments to our existing spaces to increase capacity, but we are at a point where larger capital investments are needed to continue inventing, designing and building products to meet the needs of our customers,” Schweitzer said in the announcement.

SEL says the decision on where to expand is influenced in part by the SEL Index of Freedom, an internal assessment that evaluates states on regulatory and energy factors that support business growth.

Headquartered in Pullman, the company manufactures digital products and systems designed to protect power grids from outages and improve reliability worldwide. SEL currently serves customers in 173 countries and provides a 10-year global warranty on its products.
