Multi-Drug DUI Cases Now Outnumber Single-Drug Cases in Idaho, State Toxicology Report Finds

MERIDIAN, ID – Idaho State Police Forensic Services (ISPFS) released its Fiscal Year 2025 Annual Toxicology Report, showing the highest number of toxicology cases in the past decade and continued high levels of drug and alcohol involvement in impaired driving cases.

ISPFS received 3,419 toxicology cases in FY 2025, a 12.25% increase from the previous year. Blood toxicology submissions rose about 16%, while urine submissions fell by roughly 10%.

Among adult alcohol and volatile substance cases, 82% of samples registered at or above the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08%. In adult DUI cases requiring both alcohol and drug testing, 90% showed at least one drug present. Juvenile DUI-related cases also remain a concern, with 88% of samples exceeding the under-21 legal limit of 0.02%.

The most commonly confirmed drugs included cannabinoids, amphetamine/methamphetamine, and fentanyl/norfentanyl, making up more than 60% of results. Multi-drug cases are now more common than single-drug cases in many adult blood toxicology submissions.

ISPFS officials said the growing volume and complexity of cases puts pressure on Idaho’s forensic system, which plays a key role in public safety and the criminal justice process.

“Based on the FY 2025 findings, ISP will continue working with partner agencies to increase training and awareness on multi-drug impairment and expand outreach and education for young drivers and their families,” said Western Command Major Jens Pattis.
