U of I to Unveil 9-Foot Joe Vandal Statue Honoring Student Legacy

MOSCOW, ID — The University of Idaho will unveil a new bronze statue of its beloved mascot, Joe Vandal, during a public ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 8. The statue will stand between ICCU Arena and the P1FCU Kibbie Dome on the west side of the Moscow campus, serving as a permanent tribute to Vandal pride.

The larger-than-life sculpture was commissioned to honor the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI) for their decades of support toward campus facilities, including the Kibbie Dome. In 1974, ASUI voted to allocate student fees to add a roof to the dome, transforming it into a landmark now recognized nationwide.

The unveiling will take place ahead of the Vandals’ football game against UC Davis, which begins at 4 p.m. A short program will include remarks from University of Idaho President Scott Green, ASUI President Seyi Arogundade, and artist Gareth Curtiss, who designed and sculpted the statue in collaboration with students, alumni, faculty, and community members.

“While leaning into the future, Vandals honor decades of student support,” Green said. “We look forward to unveiling this symbol of the Vandal spirit as a timeless monument to the generous contributions of our Vandal student body, past and present.”

Cast entirely in bronze, the statue weighs approximately 2,000 pounds and stands over 9 feet tall on a 5-foot-wide base. It will remain covered and fenced off until its official debut.
