Convicted Felon Arrested After Attempt to Deceive Spokane Valley Deputy

SPOKANE, VALLEY, WA – A Spokane Valley man was taken into custody last week after allegedly providing a false name to a Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy during a traffic stop for expired registration. The suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Alex E. Short, was found to be a convicted felon with multiple active warrants.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. on November 8 when a deputy stopped a Toyota truck on Sprague Avenue for having an unreadable and expired license plate. The driver, who initially identified himself as “Patrick L. Jones,” could not provide identification, registration, or proof of insurance.

Deputies became suspicious when the name and date of birth provided by Short returned no record. After detaining him and verifying information with California authorities, deputies determined that the driver’s identity was false. A search of Short revealed a debit card bearing his real name, along with drug paraphernalia and a prescription bottle labeled with another person’s name.

Once his identity was confirmed, deputies learned that Short had multiple active warrants, including felony Violation of a Protection Order, a felony Department of Corrections escape hold, and misdemeanor warrants for fourth-degree assault and possession of another’s identification.

Short was initially denied booking at the Spokane County Jail due to medical concerns and was transported to a hospital for clearance before being returned to custody. He now faces additional charges of making false statements to a public servant, possession of a legend drug without a prescription, and driving without a valid license.
