BOISE, ID — U.S. Senator Mike Crapo has recognized 24 Idahoans with the 2024 Spirit of Freedom: Idaho Veterans Service Award, including two Lewiston residents, Bill Harnish and Elizabeth “Betsy” Gaines. The annual award honors Idaho veterans and volunteers who have demonstrated exceptional service to their communities and the nation.
The Spirit of Freedom Award was established by Senator Crapo to spotlight the achievements of veterans and community members who go above and beyond in serving others. This year’s honorees include individuals from across the state who have shown commitment through military service, community leadership, and advocacy for veterans’ issues.
Bill Harnish, a U.S. Navy veteran from Lewiston, served from 1959 to 1963 and remained active in veterans’ affairs throughout his life. As a longtime member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans (DAV), he helped organize local events, mentored younger veterans, and volunteered with numerous service projects benefiting the LC Valley.
Betsy Gaines, a Lewiston native and dedicated community advocate, was honored for her longstanding volunteer work with veterans’ organizations and support services. Known for her coordination of care packages and veterans’ appreciation events, Gaines has been instrumental in strengthening connections between the civilian and military communities.
“Each recipient has demonstrated that the spirit of freedom lives on through their actions,” Crapo said in a statement. “Their selfless service uplifts not just the veteran community but all Idahoans.”
The 2024 awards were announced in advance of Veterans Day, with official certificates and commemorations sent to each recipient. Other honorees hailed from Boise, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and other communities across the state.
