Clarkston Firefighters Raise Alarm as Fourth Layoff Notice Issued Ahead of City Council Meeting

CLARKSTON, WA — The Clarkston Professional Firefighters Local 2299 is urging residents to attend Monday evening’s City Council meeting after learning that another firefighter-paramedic has received a layoff notice, bringing the total to four.

According to the union, the cuts would affect four of the city’s 13 firefighter-paramedics, prompting concerns about staffing levels and response capabilities. In a public statement, Local 2299 said firefighting and emergency medical response require “time-critical, labor-intensive, and highly technical” work, and warned that reduced staffing could put residents at risk.

Union representatives said the latest layoff notice was recently issued by the City of Clarkston Fire Department, escalating ongoing concerns about budget decisions and impacts on public safety.

Local 2299 is asking community members to attend the Clarkston City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 829 5th Street. Firefighters and supporters plan to speak during the meeting, urging elected officials to reconsider the staffing reductions.

“We need your support and your voice,” the union said, adding that public safety services “should not be eliminated because of poor financial decisions.”
