Idaho State Police Arrest Suspect in 2022 New Plymouth Double Homicide After Forensic Firearm Match

NEW PLYMOUTH, ID — Idaho State Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a 2022 double homicide in New Plymouth, bringing new developments to a case that has remained open for more than three years.

According to a news release from Idaho State Police, 35-year-old Joshua M. Kirkman was taken into custody on murder charges tied to the May 14, 2022, shooting deaths of Eric Ortega and Megan Amaya at their home on Ada Road.

Investigators say the evidence indicates Kirkman knew the victims. Following the killings, he allegedly fled from Malheur County deputies and threw a pistol into a nearby canal. That firearm was later recovered and confirmed through forensic testing to be the weapon used in the homicides.

Although Kirkman reportedly denied knowing Ortega and Amaya, detectives say witness statements and surveillance footage show he had visited the residence numerous times.

“These families have waited a long time for accountability in this case,” District 3 Captain Mike Winans said in the release. He added that the investigation required extensive evidence tracking, video review, and interviews with multiple individuals connected to the case.

Investigators also believe additional suspects were involved. ISP reports that further charges are possible as detectives continue working with county prosecutors and partnering agencies. The Payette County Sheriff’s Office, Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and prosecutors in both states assisted throughout the investigation.

All individuals involved in the case are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
