ITD to Host Lewiston Meeting for Long-Range Transportation Plan Update

BOISE, ID The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is asking Idahoans to weigh in on the future of transportation across the state as it begins updating its Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan. The federally required document, updated every five years, guides ITD and the Idaho Transportation Board as they prioritize future studies and projects.

ITD will host a series of open houses next month, with opportunities for residents to learn about the planning process and offer feedback. Upcoming dates include:

  • Dec. 2 — Coeur d’Alene: Hampton Inn and Suites, 1500 West Riverstone Drive
  • Dec. 3 — Lewiston: Lewiston Community Center, 1424 Main Street
  • Dec. 4 — Boise: Mountain View High School Library, 2000 South Millennium Way

Each event runs from 3 to 7 p.m., and identical information is available online. Comments will be accepted through Jan. 10.

The plan will look ahead to 2050, assessing Idaho’s transportation needs while considering growth, travel patterns, land use, safety, economic development, system reliability, and projected revenue. According to Amy Schroeder, division administrator for planning, the goal is not to identify specific construction projects but to build a long-term strategy based on data and public input.

“This policy document looks at current conditions, existing plans and future trends in Idaho and lays the foundation for ITD to continue to deliver on our mission of safety, mobility and economic opportunity,” Schroeder said. “It’s about determining the best strategy for investing in the transportation system given the variability of future revenue.”

ITD officials say the update comes amid rapid population growth and fluctuating funding levels. The agency is also coordinating with regional planning groups and local jurisdictions to address congestion, rural safety concerns, and alternative transportation options across Idaho’s statewide network.

An additional public comment period will be offered in summer 2026, with the full plan expected to be released in 2027.
