BOISE, ID – Nearly 82 million Americans are hitting the road, skies, and rails this Thanksgiving holiday weekend, including an estimated 478,000 Idahoans, according to AAA. Lower gas prices are helping drive the increased travel, with motorists seeing some of the most affordable prices in months.
AAA reports the average price of regular gas in Idaho is now $3.27 per gallon—three cents cheaper than last week and 13 cents lower than a month ago. However, it still ranks Idaho as the 8th most expensive state for fuel. The national average currently stands at $3.04 per gallon.
“Get an early jump on your chosen travel day if you can,” advised AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “With another 1.6 million travelers on the move this year compared to last, travelers can expect congestion both at the airport and on the road.”
Thanksgiving travel this year spans from Tuesday, November 25 through Monday, December 1—the longest and busiest holiday travel window of 2025. Nearly 90% of travelers will take to the roads, with air and other modes of transportation also setting records.

Crude oil prices are also contributing to lower fuel costs. West Texas Intermediate crude is trading around $58 per barrel—more than $10 cheaper than the same time last year.
AAA expects to respond to more than 600,000 roadside assistance calls nationwide during the holiday travel period, including about 1,000 calls in Idaho. The agency encourages drivers to schedule a pre-trip inspection, pack protein snacks and water, and ensure emergency kits are stocked.
“Check traffic and weather conditions before you leave,” Conde added. “And if you’re flying, download your airline’s mobile app and enable notifications to stay informed about your flight.”
