US-12 Reopens After Emergency Rock Removal Near Arrow Bridge

MYRTLE, ID — U.S. Highway 12 near Arrow Bridge has reopened to all traffic as of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday after crews completed emergency work to clear a hazardous rockslide from the adjacent hillside, according to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD).

A portion of the slope shifted late last week, sending loose rock and debris toward the roadway and prompting a full closure for safety. ITD crews and construction partners worked continuously since Friday, removing an estimated 350 truckloads of material through rock scaling, excavation, and cleanup operations.

As an added safety measure, a concrete barrier is now in place along the roadway edge to protect drivers in the event of any small additional rock movement.

“A big thank you to both our construction partners and maintenance crews for mobilizing and tackling the slope so quickly,” said Operations and Traffic Engineering Manager Jared Hopkins. He also extended appreciation to supporting agencies, including Idaho State Police, Idaho Fish and Game, the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, Nez Perce County Road and Bridge, and the City of Lewiston Fire Department, for assisting with the multiday emergency response.

With the Thanksgiving holiday travel period underway, ITD encourages motorists to check Idaho 511 for current road conditions. Drivers can visit 511.idaho.gov, call 5-1-1, or use the Idaho 511 mobile app for updates.
