SPOKANE, WA — Spokane Community College will spotlight Indigenous designers from across the region on Tuesday as the campus’s Native American Students Organization hosts its first-ever Native American Fashion Show. The free event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. inside the Littlefoot Bigfoot Sasquatch Auditorium.
College organizers say the show is designed to bring together culture, creativity, and community while giving Native designers a platform to share their work. Several artists representing Tribes throughout the Inland Northwest are scheduled to present their original designs, including Rika Powaukee of the Nez Perce Tribe; Ann Ford of the Colville and Coeur d’Alene Tribes; Lisa Whitefoot of the Yakama Nation; and Lacey Bacon Abrahamson, whose heritage includes the Shoshone, Coeur d’Alene, Colville, and Spokane Tribes. Additional designers—Rebecca Orturo, Austin Massilaw, and Sherman Birdtail—will also participate.
Runway presentations featuring the Native Youth Project are planned throughout the evening. Vendors offering Native-led goods and businesses will set up nearby, creating a marketplace atmosphere alongside the show.
Guests will be treated to refreshments catered by Jewel of the North, served in the Brown Addition of the Spokane Community Center.
Members of the Native American Students Organization say they hope this debut event becomes an annual celebration of Indigenous artistry and expression.
