MOSCOW, ID – The 48-year-old Moscow man who was arrested following an armed standoff at his home last summer has pleaded guilty to a felony.

James Shepard was sentenced for unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Latah County Second District Court on Monday. Judge Megan Marshall sentenced Shepard to between two and four years in prison. Judge Marshall retained jurisdiction and will review the sentence after one year, according to online court records.

Shepard was arrested by the Latah County Regional SWAT Team at his home in East Moscow in late August. Earlier that day, Shepard was cited for a misdemeanor for displaying sexually explicit images in public view.

That same night, Moscow Police were called back to Shepard’s home when he fired a gun outside. He barricaded himself inside and refused to talk to officers, which led to the SWAT Team’s response. Shepard was eventually arrested peacefully after nearby residents were evacuated. The Latah County Sheriff’s Office, Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, and Lewiston Police Department also responded to the standoff.

Shepard previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor public display of offensive sexual material.
