ASOTIN, WA — With holiday deliveries on the rise, the Asotin Police Department is reminding residents to take steps to keep their packages out of the hands of would-be thieves.
In a seasonal safety message, Chief Monte Renzelman said the busy shopping period often means packages are left unattended on porches and doorsteps — a prime opportunity for “modern-day grinches” on the lookout for quick thefts. The department is urging community members to stay alert and use simple preventative measures to avoid becoming victims.
The department recommends shoppers track packages closely, schedule deliveries for times when someone is home and leave secure delivery instructions when possible. Residents are also encouraged to use doorbell cameras, require signatures for higher-value deliveries and partner with neighbors to keep watch for suspicious activity.
Online shoppers are urged to use reputable websites, avoid public Wi-Fi during transactions, update device security, and stay vigilant for phishing emails that mimic shipping notifications.
Police also encourage residents to check packages immediately after they arrive and report any suspicious behavior.
“With just a little caution and mindfulness, we can all help prevent Grinch-like acts and ensure that packages arrive in the hands of their rightful owners,” Chief Renzelman said.
The Asotin Police Department wishes the community a safe and happy holiday season.
