Record-Breaking Holiday Travel Expected Nationwide and in Idaho, AAA Says

BOISE, ID — Holiday travel is set to break records this year, with AAA projecting more than 122 million Americans — including about 700,000 Idahoans — will travel 50 miles or more between December 20 and January 1. The estimate represents the highest year-end travel volume AAA has ever recorded.

“Even when people face economic uncertainty, seeing loved ones is a high priority,” said Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “Please be patient, no matter how or when you make your trip. It’s merrier — and safer — to keep calm and stay on Santa’s nice list.”

Heavy Traffic and Crowded Airports Expected

Drivers will face the worst congestion on Friday, December 19, with slowdowns continuing through the weekend’s afternoon and evening hours. Travel conditions are expected to ease on December 24 and 25.

Airports will also see significant crowds. AAA lists December 20 and 21 as the busiest flying days, while December 25 and 26 are likely to be the quietest. Conde encouraged travelers to start early but ensure they are well-rested before beginning long trips.

Idaho’s Top Holiday Destinations

For the second year in a row, Las Vegas tops the list of most popular destinations for Idaho holiday travelers. Other leading spots include Salt Lake City, Anaheim/Los Angeles, Maui, Phoenix, Portland, Billings, Denver, Seattle, and Orlando.

Most Travelers Hitting the Road

AAA estimates that 110 million Americans will travel by car, representing nearly 90% of all holiday travelers and an increase of 2.1 million from last year. More than 8 million people are expected to fly, a 2.3% increase, while another 4.9 million will take cruises, buses, or trains, marking a 9% year-over-year rise.

Travel Costs Rising in Most Categories

Compared to last year, domestic airfare is up 7%, hotels are up 13%, and rental cars are up about 1%. Cruises are the exception, with average fares down 14%. Idaho gas prices remain relatively flat, averaging $3.08 per gallon, just six cents higher than this time last year.

Conde noted that travelers headed to colder destinations may still find reasonable last-minute hotel rates.

AAA Prepares for Holiday Roadside Calls

AAA expects to respond to nearly 880,000 roadside assistance calls nationwide during the holiday stretch, including about 1,500 in Idaho. The agency urges drivers to conduct pre-trip checks of their batteries, engines, and tires. “The best place to catch a vehicle issue is close to home,” Conde said.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

AAA recommends shipping gifts ahead of arrival, packing only essentials, and keeping medications and clothing changes in carry-ons. Travelers are also advised to monitor airline apps, weather conditions, and traffic cameras. Drivers should carry an emergency kit, warm clothing, blankets, snacks, and water, and notify family or friends of their travel plans.

“Do everything you can to avoid stress and save the surprises for unwrapping presents,” Conde said.

AAA Idaho is part of AAA Oregon/Idaho and serves 900,000 members across the region. The organization supports more than 63 million motorists nationwide.
