Idaho gas prices drop below $3 for first time since early 2024

BOISE, ID — Idaho drivers are seeing some relief at the pump as the state’s average price for regular gasoline has dipped below $3 per gallon for the first time since January 2024, according to AAA Idaho.

As of Monday, December 15, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gas is $2.99. That marks a 12-cent decrease from one week ago and a 31-cent drop compared to one month ago. The current average is also the same price Idaho drivers were paying this time last year.

Nationally, the average gas price is $2.91 per gallon, with 38 states now reporting prices at or below $3. Oklahoma currently has the lowest average price at $2.30 per gallon, while Hawaii has the highest at $4.43 per gallon.

AAA Idaho Public & Government Affairs Director Matthew Conde said the state has seen two consecutive weeks of notable price declines.

“For two weeks in a row, we’ve seen 12-cent drops in Idaho gas prices,” Conde said, noting the state now ranks 15th in the nation for the most expensive fuel.

AAA reports that falling crude oil prices are contributing to the downward trend. West Texas Intermediate crude oil is currently trading near $56 per barrel, which has helped apply downward pressure on gas prices nationwide.

Conde encouraged drivers to look for additional savings by using fuel rewards programs offered by grocery stores, particularly during the holiday shopping season.

As of December 15, average gas prices across Idaho communities include: Boise at $2.97, Coeur d’Alene at $2.93, Idaho Falls at $2.98, Lewiston at $2.91, and Pocatello at $3.00. Twin Falls reported the highest average among listed cities at $3.06.
