LEWISTON, ID — A Lewiston woman is facing two felony charges following an alleged altercation with sheriff’s deputies at the Nez Perce County Detention Center last week.
According to court documents, Catanah M. Ferro was arrested December 12 on two counts of battery upon certain personnel.
The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred around 2:45 a.m. while Ferro was in custody at the detention center. Court records state she was placed in a padded safe cell due to safety concerns and was being transitioned into a suicide smock.
The affidavit alleges Ferro had struck her head against a wall in a holding cell and made statements indicating self-harm. Deputies reportedly attempted to remove personal items when Ferro allegedly became resistant.
According to the affidavit, deputies guided Ferro to the ground to maintain control and continue the procedure. While on the ground, Ferro is accused of intentionally biting two on-duty sheriff’s deputies.
Court documents allege Ferro bit one deputy on the forearm and another on the calf. The affidavit states Ferro allegedly refused to release the bites, prompting a deputy to deploy a taser in order to gain compliance.
Deputies were eventually able to disengage and exit the cell, according to court records.
Court documents state both deputies sustained bite injuries and were treated at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. The affidavit indicates the injuries were consistent with exposure to bodily fluids.
Evidence listed in the case includes photographs of the injuries and safe cell video footage.
A magistrate later determined there was probable cause to believe the alleged offenses occurred. The determination was signed December 14 and filed with the court on December 15.
The case is being prosecuted by the Nez Perce County Prosecutor’s Office. As of publication, Ferro has not entered a plea, and the charges remain allegations.
