14-year-old Sandpoint High School student arrested after violence threats reported

SANDPOINT, ID — A Sandpoint High School student has been arrested after investigators determined that threats of violence made toward the school were credible, according to the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said it received a report on Sunday, December 14, about a threatening group text message sent by a 14-year-old male student. The message raised concerns about the safety of students if they attended school the following day.

The initial report was made from the City of Ponderay, prompting a coordinated response involving the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, Ponderay Police Department, Sandpoint Police Department, the Lake Pend Oreille School District, and the sheriff’s office. Investigators contacted the student and his parents, and the juvenile was temporarily barred from attending school during the early stages of the investigation. Authorities said all weapons inside the home were voluntarily removed while the investigation continued.

On Monday, December 15, detectives reviewed the student’s phone, social media activity, and emails and found additional evidence indicating the threats were credible. Investigators then presented a probable cause affidavit to the court, which issued an arrest warrant for threatening violence on school grounds.

The juvenile was arrested and booked into the Bonner County Juvenile Detention Unit on a charge of Threatening Violence Upon School Grounds, a violation of Idaho law.

The Bonner County Sheriff’s Office said threats involving schools are taken seriously and emphasized the importance of coordinated responses to protect students, staff, and the broader community.
