Whitman County partnership raises funds to temporarily continue senior meals

COLFAX, WA – A local charity and private company have teamed up to temporarily provide a service for seniors that’s been discontinued by Council on Aging in Colfax.

The Whitman County Gazette in Colfax recently reported that Council on Aging quietly announced that they were ending their senior meals program.  The Colfax newspaper reported that the agency initially publicized the end of the meals program with a note on their door.

Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington are seeking local entities to continue the senior meals program.  The City of Pullman is joining the effort for congregate in-person senior meals.  The city announced on Monday that United Way of Whitman County and Vision and Values Cornerstone Wealth Strategies have raised 15,000 dollars for the effort.  United Way received 7,500 dollars in donations which was matched by the Pullman firm.  That’s enough money to continue in-person congregate senior meals at the Pullman Senior Center in city hall for the next three months.  Those meals will be on Tuesdays and Fridays at noon.  ALTCEW is working to try to find a long-term solution for the in-person senior meals.  The agency is also trying to bring back the home delivered senior meals which were also ended by Council on Aging.

The gazette reported last week that they reached out to a Council on Aging board member to explain what’s going with the agency.  That board member said she could not comment and would make a statement once the board voted on a message.
