Powerball Jackpot Climbs to Over $1.25 Billion

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $1.25 billion for Wednesday night’s drawing, offering lottery players another chance at a massive prize as the holiday season continues. The jackpot carries an estimated cash value of $572.1 million.

The current jackpot is the second-largest Powerball prize of the year, trailing only the $1.787 billion jackpot won Sept. 6 by tickets sold in Missouri and Texas. It also marks just the second time in Powerball history that the game has produced back-to-back billion-dollar jackpots.

The jackpot rolled over again Monday night after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn: 23, 35, 59, 63, 68 and Powerball 2. The Power Play multiplier was 4.

While there was no jackpot winner, lottery officials urged players to check their tickets carefully. Two tickets sold in Arizona and California matched all five white balls to win $1 million prizes. The drawing also produced 43 tickets worth $50,000 and 14 tickets worth $200,000.

Wednesday’s drawing will be the 44th of the current jackpot run, setting a Powerball record for the most drawings in a single jackpot cycle. The last jackpot win occurred Sept. 6.

A jackpot winner would have the option of receiving the prize as an annuity of $1.25 billion, paid out over 30 years with annual payments increasing by 5 percent, or a lump sum estimated at $572.1 million. Both options are before taxes.

Powerball tickets cost $2 per play and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Since its launch in 1992, the game has generated more than $37 billion for public programs supported by U.S. lotteries.

The odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9, while the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
