Statewide background check fees to increase in Idaho starting Jan. 1, 2026

MERIDIAN, ID — Several fees associated with fingerprint-based criminal background checks in Idaho will increase beginning January 1, 2026, according to the Idaho State Police.

The cost for a statewide fingerprint-based criminal background check will rise from $20 to $25. National fingerprint-based background checks will increase to $37 for initial concealed weapons license applicants, employment screening, professional licensure, and employees covered under the National Child Protection Act. Fees for NCPA volunteers will increase to $35.

The changes apply to all agencies authorized to provide fingerprint-based background checks and will affect services including employment screening, licensing, and concealed weapons permits. Fees for statewide name-based background checks and concealed weapons license renewals will remain unchanged at $20.

Idaho State Police said the fee increase is intended to support statutory responsibilities and address growing demand for fingerprint-based criminal history checks. The state processes more than 90,000 fingerprint cards each year, along with thousands of name-based background checks, as state and federal requirements continue to expand.

The Idaho State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification oversees the statewide criminal history repository, while many local law enforcement agencies provide fingerprinting services. Individuals seeking background checks are encouraged to confirm fees, hours, and available services with their local provider.

Additional information regarding background checks and legal requirements is available under Idaho Code § 67-3008.
