SEATTLE, WA – Washington Attorney General Nick Brown, along with attorneys general from 13 other states, is warning consumers to watch for gift card scams this holiday season.
According to a press release, the multi-state group has launched a public service announcement campaign aimed at helping consumers recognize and avoid gift card fraud as millions of Americans redeem cards received during the holidays. The campaign, funded by the Gift Card Fraud Prevention Alliance, will run from Dec. 26, 2025, through Jan. 31, 2026.
Officials say gift card scams often involve fraudsters posing as trusted organizations or individuals and pressuring victims to buy gift cards and share the codes. Consumers are reminded that government agencies and legitimate businesses do not demand payment using gift cards and that urgent or secretive requests are common warning signs.
Brown encouraged consumers to inspect gift card packaging before purchase, only check balances through official retailer websites, and report suspected fraud to the Washington Attorney General’s Office. Reports, officials say, help investigators track patterns and pursue those responsible.
