COLFAX, WA — Authorities are investigating after possible human remains were discovered early Monday morning in a remote area along South Palouse River Road outside of Colfax.
According to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the report alongside the Colfax Police Department and the Whitman County Coroner. The location of the discovery was outside the city limits of Colfax.
Due to the advanced state of decomposition, investigators were unable to determine the identity or sex of the deceased at the scene. The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab responded and is assisting with evidence collection.
The remains are now in the custody of the Whitman County Coroner. Officials said the coroner’s office will work to determine the individual’s identity, as well as the cause and manner of death. The investigation remains ongoing.
