BOISE, ID – AAA Idaho reports that gas prices across the state have declined just ahead of the busy year-end travel period, offering some relief for the hundreds of thousands of Idahoans expected to travel for the holidays.
As of Monday, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Idaho was $2.89. According to AAA, that price is 10 cents lower than a week ago, 39 cents lower than a month ago, and 17 cents lower than this time last year. Idaho currently ranks 17th nationally for the most expensive fuel.
The national average price stood at $2.85 per gallon, slightly below Idaho’s average. Nationally, prices are also down compared to recent weeks and months. Hawaii had the highest average gas prices at $4.42 per gallon, while Oklahoma reported the lowest average at $2.29.
AAA estimates about 700,000 Idaho residents will travel during the holiday period, contributing to a projected 122 million travelers nationwide taking a year-end vacation.

AAA travel projections indicate that most of the busiest days for road travel occurred over the weekend. Travelers heading out on December 24 or 25 may encounter lighter traffic conditions. Air travel, however, is expected to remain busy on December 24.
Most travelers are expected to reach their destinations by car. AAA projects about 110 million people nationwide will drive, representing nearly 90 percent of all holiday travelers. More than 8 million people are expected to fly, while nearly 5 million will travel by cruise ship, bus, or train.
AAA also noted that the busiest days for road travel occurred over the weekend, while those traveling on December 24 or 25 may encounter lighter traffic. Air travel, however, could remain busy on December 24, and travelers are encouraged to arrive early and prepare for potential delays.
Drivers heading out for holiday trips are advised to check their vehicles and emergency kits before traveling, including flashlights, warm blankets, basic tools, water, and snacks.
