LEWISTON, ID – A 48-year-old Lewiston man was arrested after police concluded he allegedly filed a false report claiming his vehicle and personal property had been stolen, according to court documents filed in Nez Perce County.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Lewiston Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle on the evening of December 20, 2025, at a residence on Hemlock Avenue. The reporting party, identified in court documents as Zachary Aaron Reed, told officers his 2010 Ford Fusion had been stolen earlier that day and that his home had been burglarized.
Court documents state Reed reported that multiple items were missing from the residence, including tools, clothing, shoes, and books, with an estimated value in the tens of thousands of dollars. He also claimed the doorknobs to his home had been removed during the alleged burglary and that his vehicle keys were taken.
While speaking with Reed and inspecting the residence, officers noted several inconsistencies, according to the affidavit. Police reported observing clothing, shoes, and other items inside the home and inside another vehicle on the property that Reed had earlier said were stolen. Officers also noted the newly installed doorknobs appeared worn and dirty, rather than new.
As the investigation continued, police said Reed provided multiple conflicting accounts regarding when the vehicle went missing, whether he worked that day, and whether he had driven the vehicle after initially reporting it stolen. Court documents state family members provided information that conflicted with Reed’s timeline and statements.
The vehicle was later located parked off a dirt road outside Lewiston. According to the affidavit, the car was unlocked, had a shattered rear window, contained no valuables, and did not have keys inside. Officers reported the vehicle appeared to have been parked in a way intended to conceal it from view.
Based on the investigation, police concluded Reed allegedly knowingly provided false information to law enforcement regarding both the reported vehicle theft and the alleged burglary.
Reed was taken into custody and booked into the Nez Perce County Jail, according to court records. He is charged with felony registration or filing a false affidavit of vehicle theft under Idaho law, along with a misdemeanor count of providing false information to law enforcement.
