Estate gift supports Washington State University library students and collections

PULLMAN, WA — The Washington State University Libraries has received a $231,000 gift from the estate of alumnus Melvin “Mel” Hamre, according to a university announcement.

The contribution adds to the Hamre Endowment and will provide long-term funding for student employment opportunities within the libraries, as well as support for expanding library collections. Funds will be used to help offset educational costs for student workers while offering professional experience, and to purchase books, journals, and other research materials.

Hamre enrolled at Washington State College in 1950 and worked in the Holland Library as a student employee to help pay for his education. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1954 and later earned a master of education from the institution in 1961. His early library work, university officials said, played a lasting role in shaping his connection to WSU.

After completing additional graduate studies at Purdue University, Hamre spent three decades teaching poultry production and marketing at the University of Minnesota before retiring in 1995. He later volunteered for many years with the Washington State History Museum and served with the Tacoma Historical Society.

According to the university, Hamre maintained a strong connection to WSU throughout his life and supported several programs across campus, including the libraries, arts, agriculture, and education. His lifetime giving to the university exceeded $1 million, earning him recognition as a WSU Laureate.

University officials said the estate gift will provide permanent support for library students and resources for years to come.
