Idaho Potato Drop Returns to State Capitol for New Year’s Eve Celebration

BOISE, ID – The 13th annual Idaho Potato Drop will return to the Idaho State Capitol on New Year’s Eve with live entertainment, activities, and a midnight countdown.

The event has been nominated for a third time for USA Today’s “10 Best Reader’s Choice Award” for Best New Year’s Eve Drop. Organizers say the free, all-ages event draws visitors from Idaho and beyond to ring in the new year.

Festivities begin at 6 p.m. as the GlowTato rises into position for the evening. Guitarist Joe Perez will perform the national anthem, followed by Boise Rock School, which is marking its 13th consecutive year participating in the event. Musical performances throughout the evening include Mall Goth Moths, Hannah Strumner, Zack Q & the Frizz, and headliner American Mile, who will perform leading up to midnight.

The event will also feature food trucks, vendors, sporting events, and displays of Idaho potatoes.

Skiers and snowboarders will compete in the Idaho Potato Drop Urban Rail Jam, with snow provided by Bogus Basin and rail features built by the Onslaught Crew. The Urban SnowPark Series associated with the event received SAM Magazine’s international Terrain Park Contest award in 2024. The competition has partnered with local snow sports organizations and the United States Ski & Snowboard Association.

Additional activities include a beer garden, photo opportunities with Spuddy Buddy and the Big Idaho Potato Tour truck, and official Idaho Potato Drop merchandise.

At midnight, the GlowTato will be lowered, followed by a pyrotechnic display.

Live coverage of the Idaho Potato Drop will begin at 10:30 p.m. PST on KTVB.com, KTVB+ on Roku and Amazon Fire TV, and the KTVB mobile app.
