BOISE, ID — Idahoans and visitors will have a chance to enjoy winter recreation at no cost on Friday, Jan. 3, during Free Ski Day at Park N’ Ski areas across the state and at select Idaho state parks.
According to a news release from Idaho Department Parks and Recreation, the annual Free Ski Day applies to Park N’ Ski areas managed by the agency’s Recreation Bureau, with several partner organizations hosting activities and events throughout the state. Park N’ Ski permits will not be required on Jan. 3 at participating locations.
At the Idaho City Park N’ Ski Area, events tied to the Idaho City Backcountry Yurts have been canceled due to a lack of snow. Updates on snow conditions and future activities will be posted on the Idaho Non-Motorized Trails Facebook page.
At Fourth of July Pass, the Panhandle Nordic Club will host a free ski day celebration featuring a ski or snowshoe poker event. Registration opens at 10 a.m., with a drawing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Participation costs $12 for adults, $5 for children under 13, or $25 for families, with proceeds supporting trail maintenance and grooming.
The Palouse Divide Park N’ Ski Area will hold its free ski day activities later in the season, on Jan. 17. The event will include free ski lessons, complimentary gear rentals, and access to groomed trails. Due to growing attendance in recent years, advance registration is required.
In addition, Ponderosa State Park will offer a Free Snowshoe Day on Jan. 3, with entry and winter access fees waived. Free snowshoe tours will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with guided outings beginning hourly. Rental equipment is included during tour times, and pre-registration is required.
Park N’ Ski areas are funded through user fees and managed in partnership with local organizations to provide winter recreation opportunities statewide. More information, including an interactive Park N’ Ski map, is available through Idaho Parks and Recreation.
