Commerce awards $63 million for affordable homeownership projects statewide, includes Asotin and Whitman counties

OLYMPIA, WA — The Washington State Department of Commerce has awarded more than $63 million to support affordable homeownership projects across the state, including funding for projects in Asotin and Whitman counties, according to an announcement released Monday.

The funding, distributed through Commerce’s Homeownership Capital Programs, supports 43 projects statewide and is expected to create 621 affordable homeownership units for first-time buyers. State funds are matched with nearly $199.3 million in additional public and private investment, a roughly 3-to-1 match, Commerce officials said.

Local awards

In Asotin County, Lewis-Clark Valley Habitat for Humanity received $625,000 for a down payment assistance program supporting five affordable units.

Whitman County received multiple awards:

  • Habitat for Humanity of Palouse was awarded $900,000 to support six units through down payment assistance.
  • Hills and Rivers Housing Trust received $1,194,110 for its Pullman East Townhomes project, which will create eight affordable units.

Statewide impact

Commerce officials said the funding will support a mix of new construction, down payment assistance, and affordability subsidies designed to create permanently affordable homes. Of the total funding awarded, 42% went to rural areas, 40% to urban areas, and the remaining funds were split between King County and statewide projects.

Eastern Washington organizations received $13.5 million across 12 projects, while Western Washington organizations received $44.6 million. Four statewide organizations shared $5 million in funding.

Commerce received 77 applications from 48 organizations during the fall 2025 funding cycle.
