Applications Open Jan. 15 for Idaho Spring Black Bear Controlled Hunts

BOISE, ID – Applications for Idaho’s 2026 spring black bear controlled hunts will open January 15 and run through February 15, according to Idaho Fish and Game. Hunters must hold a valid 2026 Idaho hunting license to apply, and applications are accepted online through GoOutdoorsIdaho.com, the Idaho Fish and Game mobile app, by phone at 1-800-554-8685, or in person at Fish and Game offices and licensed vendors.

Controlled hunts are limited-tag hunts awarded through a random drawing and often offer higher success rates than general seasons. Successful applicants will be notified by March 10, with any leftover tags going on sale April 1. Idaho Fish and Game also reminds hunters that proof of passing a bear identification test is required before hunting black bears, as grizzly bears are federally protected in Idaho. More details are available in the 2025 Idaho Big Game Seasons and Rules booklet and on the Idaho Fish and Game website.
