LEWISTON, ID — The City of Lewiston has updated address signage requirements for properties accessed by fire apparatus access roads, including flag lots and properties served by long or shared driveways.
City documentation shows the update clarifies when address signs are required and where they must be placed to help emergency responders identify access routes and locate structures not visible from a public street.
The requirements apply to properties where structures are set back from the public right-of-way, including flag lots, private access roads, and shared driveways. In these cases, address signs must be installed along the access route and at key points such as road entrances, intersections, or turnarounds.
Address signs must meet city specifications for size, color, lettering, placement, and visibility. Signs must remain unobstructed and legible at all times. Properties with multiple buildings are also required to display building identification in a manner approved by the city.
City officials state that the addressing standards are applied administratively and do not require Lewiston City Council approval unless a new street name is created or an existing street name is modified.
Residents who are unsure whether their property qualifies as a flag lot or is subject to the updated signage requirements can contact the City of Lewiston Public Works Department for clarification.
