Bureau of Indian Education Graduation Rates Reach Record High in 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of the Interior announced Thursday that graduation rates for students attending Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)–funded high schools reached a record high in 2025, marking the highest level in the agency’s history.

According to the department, the graduation rate rose from 51% in 2015 to 79% in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and bucking national trends that have shown declines in student outcomes following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interior officials attributed the increase to long-term reforms focused on accountability, instructional support, and data-driven decision-making across the BIE school system. Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Billy Kirkland said the gains reflect an emphasis on workforce readiness and access to quality education for American Indian and Alaska Native students.

The Bureau of Indian Education provides direct services and funding for more than 400,000 American Indian and Alaska Native students nationwide, supporting education from early childhood through post-secondary programs.

BIE Director Tony L. Dearman said the graduation improvements are supported by measurable academic progress, including a 9% increase in math proficiency and a 10% increase in English language arts proficiency since 2016.

The department also reported system-wide changes, including updated data systems that provide schools with instructional resources, pacing guides, and real-time reporting tools to identify student needs earlier. Professional learning communities and expanded educator training were also cited as factors supporting student progress.

Interior officials said the Bureau of Indian Education plans to maintain the upward trend through continued collaboration with tribes, educators, and families, with a continued focus on transparency and instructional support.
