Idahoans with disabilities can now save money through ABLE accounts without losing public assistance

BOISE, ID – Idahoans with disabilities can now save money for disability-related expenses without losing eligibility for public assistance.

Residents can open the savings accounts, formally called Achieving a Better Life Experience, or ABLE, accounts through a new website launched Thursday, at idahoable.com, the Idaho State Treasurer’s Office announced.

In 2025, the Legislature and Gov. Brad Little approved the creation of the accounts through House Bill 26.

“The launch of the Idaho ABLE Savings Plan is a great opportunity for more Idahoans to save money, and I’m excited that they now have access to these accounts through Idaho’s own ABLE program,” Idaho State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth said in a statement.

Before Idaho allowed the accounts, Idaho was one of three states without them — and people with disabilities who had more than $2,000 in their bank accounts risked no longer qualifying for Social Security Income, Idaho Reports reported.

Since the law directed Idaho to partner with a national group of ABLE accounts, the law is not projected to cost the state money, according to Idaho Reports.

Idaho’s ABLE website has information on eligibility, contribution limits, investment options and enrollment. People are eligible for ABLE accounts if they have a disability that began before age 46, according to the Idaho State Independent Living Council.
